The New York Times details the newest target of file-sharing pirates. With many textbooks costing well north of $100, students are fighting back and finding free (extra-legal) e-textbooks through networks like PirateBay.org.
When high album costs triggered a couple of high-minded students to create “Napster” to exchange music, the music industry was brought to its knees. While the textbook industry might not find itself on its knees anytime soon, it may find it prudent to start bending – lest student pirates do it for them. Meanwhile, Piratebay.org, which is comfortably based in Sweden, has been able to thwart all legal action seeking to suppress their activities.
