Surprising Statistics on Mobile Usage for the MAT@USC and MSW@USC Apps

February 29, 2012
Less than a year ago, we worked with our partners at USC to launch iPad, iPhone and iPod mobile apps for MAT@USC and MSW@USC students. These apps are mobile versions of the programs’ web-based learning management systems which allow students to do nearly all activites available on the web platfrom, including accessing multi-media course content and intra-school social networks.
We’ve always known that investments in mobile platforms were important and that our busy graduate students would appreciate increased access to their courses, classmates and professors, but the statistics we’re sharing today confirms this. We even pleasantly surprised ourselves with the numbers!
We’re seeing that our learning management mobile app plays a major role for many of our graduate students. Here are the numbers:
- Over 40 percent of MSW@USC students are active users of either the iPad, iPhone or iPod apps.
- Over a quarter of MAT@USC students are active users of either the iPad, iPhone or iPod apps.
The MSW@USC program’s 1,200 enrolled students have over 500 active app users. The MAT@USC program has 1,700 enrolled students and over 450 active app users. We’ve defined an active user as one that has signed-in at least 10 times a month, spent on average five minutes per log-in and viewed at least five pages.
“It’s really exciting to see a large number of students embrace our mobile apps and incorporate it into their learning routines,” said James Kenigsberg, Chief Technology Officer at 2tor. “Unleashing great universities means bringing their world-class professors, instruction and communities to students’ fingertips and we’re fortunate to be working with universities like USC that are not afraid to push the envelope and offer new technologies to their students.”
We’re thrilled by the strong adoption of the app by students, and what this means for mobile learning and higher ed. We recently announced the availability of Android apps, and we’re currently working on the next iteration of our mobile platform. 2tor has partnered with TouchApp Media to develop all of our mobile applications.
